ORVIS COMMISIONS A CUSTOM LAND ROVER IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BARBOUR AND EAST COAST DEFENDER FOR THE ULTIMATE GIVEAWAY

East Coast Defender Automotive Photography by Deremer Studios LLC

The SUV will be used to promote Barbour’s Land Rover Defender Collection sold exclusively through Orvis.

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – OCT. 18, 2017 – Orvis has commissioned a custom Heritage Land Rover in partnership with East Coast Defender (E.C.D.) and Barbour North America, a 123 year old British heritage and lifestyle brand, to be used to promote the company’s new Land Rover Defender Collection offered exclusively through Orvis.
“Project Barbour” is a Heritage Edition Defender 90 that combines E.C.D.’s hand-crafted workmanship with the timeless, rugged style that is synonymous with the Barbour name. Orvis will display the SUV at select events along the East Coast through 2018. Guests have a chance to win the fully restored Defender free of charge through The Great Defender Adventure Sweepstakes offered through Orvis.

“Barbour North America challenged our team to create the ultimate custom Heritage Land Rover Defender for Orvis,” said Scott Wallace, East Coast Defender Co-Owner. “Barbour represents the pinnacle of outdoor fashion and style and we believe our hand-crafted Defender is a perfect match for such a revered global brand. We take great pride in knowing that one of the world’s foremost heritage brands trusted E.C.D. to build a product that reflects their high standards of excellence. ‘Project Barbour’ artfully represents our scalability to design and build a custom vehicle for an international brand, as well as private owner.”

East Coast Defender’s “Project Barbour” started with a Defender 90 and is powered by a rebuilt Rover V-8 engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Interior appointments and exterior features throughout include signature Barbour styling and branding. The front seats and rear benches feature Saddle Leather with Barbour Tartan inserts, paired with Barbour Tartan door pockets with Barbour zip closures. Other interior features include a MOMO Indy steering wheel, Kenwood stereo with Infinity speakers and LED lighting throughout. The custom SUV is finished in Coniston Green with matching colored 16-inch Wolf Steel wheels shod with BFGoodrich All Terrain tires. The tan Rovers North soft top proudly bears the trademark Barbour logo.

“To support Orvis and our new Land Rover Defender Collection in the U.S., we wanted to pair up with a custom Land Rover builder who is as passionate about their brand as we are about ours,” said Tom Hooven, General Manager of Barbour North America. “Our search naturally led us to East Coast Defender. Their team takes extreme pride in their workmanship and were incredible to work with during the design process. They certainly captured the essence of our brand and new Land Rover Defender Collection in this SUV.”

Participants can enter to win the Defender at a participating Orvis retail store or on-line at orvis.com/defendersweeps. The winner will be chosen at the close of the sweepstakes on Father’s Day 2018.

“Barbour and Land Rover converge at the crossroads of the most iconic brands in British history,” said Tory Myler, Manager – Retail Marketing Programs at Orvis. “Naturally, we’re excited these companies have come together for a new Collection that’s available exclusively through Orvis. We premiered the Barbour-edition Defender earlier this year during an event at our New York City store on 5th Avenue and the Defender was a tremendous focal point of our display. Not only will this vehicle be an incredible prize for the winner, but a rare collectible that represents four of the world’s most revered brands.”

The Defender will be visiting selected Orvis retail stores and other partner locations throughout the U.S. in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. For a full event listing or to enter for a free chance to win the Defender, visit orvis.com/defendersweeps for more information.

ECD Innovations Coming During the Second Half of 2017

n the East Coast Defender Rover Dome, we look forward to nothing more than a great challenge. Working on iconic Land Rover Defenders every day offers that opportunity, but to truly push ourselves, we look to create and innovate. Every new build is an opportunity to do something exceptional and exclusive to the design of these new-aged Defenders. Our Land Rover Defenders for sale are some of the most technically sophisticated on the market, but we always see room for improvement.

Our continuing 2017 fleet promises just that. Every build has presented us with ideas for how we can continue to push our way towards perfection, and the rest of the year we will be incorporating many of those concepts. Early builds like the otherworldly Project Viper hint at some of the innovative directions we are going, but there is more to come.

  • This year, we’ve hired a vehicle designer with the sole focus of taking our Defenders up another notch. We’ve found that a fresh set of eyes on our concepts has opened the door for some ground-breaking looks.
  • Our leather interiors are all crafted on-site and by hand, giving us a range of flexibility in terms of what we can do. For the rest of the year we’ll continue to expand our offerings with new materials, textures, and color palettes.
  • Another big jump we are looking to take is an upgrade in drivability:
  • Having mastered the ability to make Land Rover Defenders run from 0-60 in under seven seconds, we’ve turned our attention to how much better they can perform in common around-the-town situations.
  • With this in mind, East Coast Defender looks to incorporate transfer cases with optional two-wheel drive capabilities. This will help greatly improve fuel economy and allow drivers an easier path down the road.
  • Continued innovation will be our main focus for 2017. For starters, push button start and keyless entry is a feature you can choose for your new, customized Defender.

For now, that’s the only part of our hand that we’re willing to show. But there is so much more brewing in the Rover Dome and floating around in the imaginations of our world-class technicians. We’ve taken beat up Land Rover Defenders that were for sale and transformed them into technological marvels. As 2017 continues, we continue in the quest for the perfect truck.

West Coast Design Center: Industry’s First Custom Design Program for SUVs

East Coast Defender’s New West Coast Design Center Boasts Industry’s First Custom Design Program for SUVs

East Coast Defender announced today that its new West Coast Design Studio in Malibu, Calif., located at 22333 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 180, will open on Monday, Oct., 2, 2017. The new center is the first of its kind in the SUV industry to offer a turn-key custom design experience that enables clients to create a true, one-off Defender. It will be managed by Karissa Kreager, Client Liaison Manager for East Coast Defender. All East Coast Defender SUVs designed at the West Coast location will be built at The Rover Dome in Kissimmee, Florida.

“Our West Coast Design Studio is breaking new ground in the custom SUV market,” said Scott Wallace, East Coast Defender Co-Owner. “At most, luxury and exotic car manufacturers offer their customers a few performance modifications or body color and accessory options. However, they’re confined by a short list of options controlled by OEM and their suppliers. Contrary to that model, our Design Studio gives our clients full control of the Defender build. From the chassis and powertrain to the technology, and color of their upholstery stitching, we don’t restrict our clients to our options or opinions, we let them bring their ideas to us.”

East Coast Defender’s Design Studio experience begins with the client selecting either a Defender 90, 110, or 130 chassis. During the configuration phase of the design process, the client will be presented with various paint, leather and string samples, as well as optional technology, steering wheels, gauges, winches, wheels, tires, etc. The Design Studio will include countless samples that the client can select, or customize based on their unique profile. Powertrain and exterior options, including engine options, seating configurations, bumpers and roll cages, etc. can be reviewed in the East Coast Defender Design Manual.

The Malibu Design Center will be managed by Karissa Kreager, who’s been with East Coast Defender since 2017. She brings a wealth of experience in luxury retail sales, shopping and styling and has represented global fashion and designer brands. As the Client Liaison Manager, Karissa will be responsible for ensuring her guests experience a premium buying experience. She will provide a detailed and comprehensive buying journey that ensures her clients’ custom Defenders are built to their exact specs. She will also be a point of contact for her clients during the build process.

“We’ve gone beyond a standard buying process, to developing a true, collaborative SUV build experience,” said Tom Humble, East Coast Defender Co-owner. “During our build process, no nut or bolt is left untouched. There is no part of the vehicle that gets left as it was before. We’re taking that same level of detail and attention to quality to our design process. Every client who passes through our Design Studio will have a buying journey that is unlike anything they’ve experienced before in the automotive industry.”

The West Coast Design Studio will be similar to the new one that is currently open at ECD’s Kissimmee location. A finished East Coast Defender, which will be regularly rotated with different configurations, will be on display at the studio to give clients the opportunity to experience the craftsmanship of a finished vehicle. Clients in the area can choose to have their custom East Coast Defender delivered at the West Coast Design Studio, at the Rover Dome, or directly to their home.

“Our Design Studio experience is an immersive, collaborative process,” said Elliot Humble, East Coast Defender Co-owner. “Due to the high level of customization we offer, it will several months after finalizing the configuration before a client takes possession of their hand-crafted vehicle. The client is fully engaged every step of the way with regular photos, phone calls and updates detailing their build process via the personalized web portal and our concierge service. We also provide a 1/10 th scale version of their Defender, which is painted in our booth to match the color of their vehicle, and includes many of the personalized accessories they selected along with a few other personalized surprises along the way. There really is no other vehicle purchase program that delivers a luxury experience the way East Coast Defender can.”

East Coast Defender was founded by three self-prescribed “British petrol heads,” brothers Tom and Elliot Humble, and Scott Wallace. Growing up in England, near the famous Lode Lane factory where the Defenders were produced, the three found themselves surrounded by Defenders throughout their childhood. East Coast Defender officially opened its facility in 2013 and has been building the world’s most celebrated, handcrafted Defenders since that time. Today, the company is based in Kissimmee, Florida, where every ECD custom Defender is built by hand in the company’s 21,000 sq. ft. production facility, called the Rover Dome.

The Tech You’ve Come to Expect

The Land Rover Defender has evolved over the decades, but was essentially born in 1948 in the Series 1. A sturdy and solid utility vehicle, it did everything asked of it in the farmlands of the English countryside while in the shadow of World War II. The truck’s reputation was forged there, but it certainly wasn’t one of glamour and luxury; Defenders were workhorse vehicles, every inch used for pure functionality.

Approximately 70 years later, the functional design has remained the same, but now technology has come to join it. Many Defenders, even as recently as the 1980s and 90s, did not have elemental modern day touches like power windows and air-conditioning. In 1993, Land Rover introduced the Defender NAS series, which due to regulation, expanded some accessories. But the real boom in high-fidelity came in the secondary market, as Land Rover stopped North American production of the Defenders in 1997.

We look to push Defenders even further still. Modern trucks need modern tech, and we have a world-class team ready to assemble it all on a fully reborn and rebuilt Defender chassis. These are just some of the many technical innovations we are placing into Land Rover Defenders in 2017:

  • Screens: Our custom-installed Sony infotainment systems give drivers access to an array of functions with the ease of touch screen giving you the ability to control everything from a single touch.
  • GPS and Wi-Fi: Installed throughout the vehicle, in car Wi-Fi will follow our Defenders everywhere. Modern GPS is crucial and standard.
  • Cameras: World-class cameras provide a clear view behind and infront of your Defender ensuring safe driving.
  • LED Lighting: Innovative LED lighting, in both the interior and exterior, was certainly not around in the middle of the 20th century, but it is now. We’ve got systems that can make the road ahead and the interior glow.
  • Wireless Charging Systems and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto: With devices on hand at all times, you need the capability to keep them powered. Defenders with an assortment of ports and wireless charging pads are a contemporary must-have for safety and convenience.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems: Never have to check your tire pressure again with a reliable TPMS display that shows your tire pressure at each wheel in real time.
  • Cruise Control: Our vehicles are built to make the perfect daily driver. Offering cruise control on our Defenders only adds to the everyday usability of our Defenders and makes them the perfect vehicle for cross country road trips.
  • Automatic Headlights: Our headlights are set up to automatically come on during the critical times you need them allowing you to stay focused and distraction-free while traveling.
  • Keyless Entry and Push Button Start: Our latest offering allows you to approach your Defender and have it recognize your coded key fob while it remains in your pocket, then starting your Defender with a press of a button.

Land Rover Defenders are renowned for their off-road capability and relentless ability to run; mixing that with cutting edge technology, makes for an epic 21st-century truck. East Coast Defender is here to deliver this historic vehicle into modern times and to drop jaws while we are at it. Quality, function, and history are never forgotten: they are epically taken to the next level. To build your own technology-filled Defender, contact us today.

Team Spotlight: Marketing Guru Drew Gerhart

Spreading the word about the incredible things happening in the Florida-based facility of East Coast Defender is nearly as important as the work of rebuilding the Defenders themselves. For example, if there was a Land Rover Defender that was luxuriously customized, but there was no one to see it, was it really customized? Ah, these are the philosophical underpinnings of the marketing world. And at East Coast Defender, the man charged with letting the public know about the innovative work occurring at ECD, and answering the questions, is none other than Drew Gerhart.

Drew started his career with ECD in February of 2017, but he’s caught on to the culture fast. And he certainly isn’t new to off-road trucks and the wondrous ways they can be contorted; Drew spent four years with Auctions America as their Marketing Manager and spent many summers off-roading himself in Drummond Island, Michigan. He saw the opportunity at ECD as a natural fit.

So, he packed up his young family and moved south into the humid, but beautiful landscape of Central Florida. His job duties vary, but he’s the man in charge of everything marketing, PR, or outreach oriented. He’s the chess master behind the scenes of East Coast Defender’s sparks and metal; the straw that stirs the drink.

Like many others who work within ECD, he’s obsessed with innovation and what Land Rover Defenders can become in the future. Projects like Beast and Viper seem like game changers, but the playbook is still constantly evolving. Staying on top of those changes and presenting them to the public is task fit for someone who graduated a Spartan from Florida’s private university, University of Tampa. While at the UT, Drew spent his time playing in the band while consecutively working in sports marketing for the women’s basketball team.

At ECD, clients are often a celebrity-heavy crew. Discretion is sometimes required when dealing with luxury and the bold names; therefore, one of the most valuable assets a company can possess is trust.

Beyond that, Drew is always looking toward the future. This is indeed a young company with a pioneering product, so what comes next is just as exciting as what sits before him. Land Rover Defenders are made on the cutting-edge by a world-class group of people at East Coast Defender. For Drew, the best part of the job is obvious: “As a father, I love seeing the looks on kid’s faces when they see our Defenders for the first time, there’s nothing like it.”

3 Testimonials that Say it All

They say that actions speak louder than words, which is generally true. But words mean an awful lot too, especially when those words are a recommendation based on a personal experience. At East Coast Defender, we’ve built an array of innovative Land Rover Defenders over the years, each that look to speak precisely to our client’s personality. The feedback we have gotten in response has been overwhelmingly and emphatically positive.

And we hate to be that parent, but were just so proud of our Defenders that we felt the need to share some of this enthusiasm with you. These words speak volumes, and they are spoken from professionals from an assortment of fields.

(1) Servando Carrasco & Alex Morgan, Professional Soccer Players

We built Project 13 based on Alex’s jersey number, and with Servando and her unique sporting needs in mind.

“I’ve always liked the design and classic look of the Land Rover Defenders but it wasn’t until I went to the shop that I fell in love with these awesome trucks. Getting to see previous projects in person and handpicking every detail of Project 13 with the East Coast team has been a really cool experience.”—Alex Morgan

(2) The Plank Family, Founder of Under Armour

For this outrageous build dubbed Project XIII (Mr. Kevin Plank’s birthday is the 13th), we left no level of performance out. We included a 430-horsepower LS3, a roll cage, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

“Our experience working with ECD was a breeze – the team was responsive, considerate of our timeline and budget, and kept an open line of communication during our build. The progress website devoted to our project was incredibly helpful so we could check in and see real time pictures and progress! We could not be happier with the way our Defender turned out and have had so much fun with it.” – The Plank Family

(3) Sloan, Owner of the First Custom ECD Build:

Sloan was behind the wheel of our very first Defender build, and came back for more when we created the stunning Project Eclipse for her.

“This truck is so fantastic! Hand picking every little thing is such a fun and exciting process, and then to see it all come together so beautifully, with people that hand built it all there to share your excitement. Getting a custom build is a huge investment, but being a part of the process and experience, you aren’t just getting the truck, you are part of the entire evolution of your build.” -Sloan

Launch of Ultimate Vehicle Concept Division

East Coast Defender Unveils Its Most Capable SUV With Launch of Ultimate Vehicle Concept Division

East Coast Defender unveiled “Project Viper” today, its most capable SUV and the first made-to-order vehicle built by the company’s new Ultimate Vehicle Concept (UVC) division. The flagship $285,000, Chevrolet LS3 V-8 powered Defender was commissioned by a renowned doctor in 2016 and previewed by select media today at the Classic Car Club Manhattan in New York City. Only ten custom SUVs will be built on demand by the UVC division each year, making them the most exclusive custom SUVs available.

“Project Viper is our first custom SUV to emerge from the new UVC division,” said Scott Wallace, East Coast Defender Co-Owner. “We created UVC in response to the overwhelming demand from clients who want a pure, handcrafted SUV that is not limited by a specific Bill of Materials or budget. With one-of-one builds, like the Viper, we’re pushing the creative envelope with bigger, more capable trucks that celebrate our heritage with added daily comfort and reliability.”

Each UVC Defender is designed by the client and built in a separate production area at The Rover Dome in Kissimmee, Florida. East Coast Defender vehicles are designed to be capable drivers across a multitude of situations, including daily commutes. UVC vehicles will push the boundaries and be designed specifically for how the client will use the truck. Each UVC Defender will represent a no-budget, no-creative block that is built from scratch and represents a one-of-one Defender. The result will be a true, signature SUV that is purpose-built for the most extreme off-road and weather conditions, yet does not compromise ECD’s work on their other custom builds.

“Our UVC Design Studio will provide a luxury buying experience unlike anything in the world,” said Tom Humble, East Coast Defender Co-Owner. “While staying true to Land Rover heritage, our clients will be able to completely redesign their Defender. Each SUV that rolls out of our facility will be ready to cross continents or tackle the most demanding conditions in a Baja race. We’re taking the Defender to a whole new level and the Viper is the pinnacle of what a true adventure-lifestyle SUV should be.”

East Coast Defender was founded by three self-prescribed “British petrol heads”; brothers Tom and Elliot Humble, as well as their close friend Scott Wallace. Growing up near the famous Lode Lane factory in England, the brothers found themselves surrounded by Defenders throughout their childhood. They officially opened the East Coast Defender workshop in 2013 and it has been building the world’s most celebrated, handcrafted Defenders since.

Scott, a private investor with a Blue Chip corporate background and a passion for cars that began with a Porsche mug at 10 years old, later joined the company. It was his drive and a trip to the local Wawa convenience store that started a pivotal moment for East Coast Defender.

That is when the three determined that for the company to become the best Land Rover Defender builders on the planet, they needed complete control. Today, the company is based in Kissimmee, Florida, where every East Coast Defender is built by hand and completely in house at its 21,000 sq. ft. facility, named the “Rover Dome.”

“Build options available to UVC clients include custom built axles, shock absorbers, air intakes for snorkels, lighting options and off-road protection, as well as hand-built wheels,” said Elliot Humble, East Coast Defender Co-Owner. “Approximately 95 percent of the custom work is done by hand by skilled craftsmen and engineers. The build process is time intensive and includes countless hours of design, build, fit, re-design and re-fit until the vehicle exceeds UVC’s standards for design and performance.”

Project Viper performance specs include:
